Good evening — and happy spring!
Yes, at 7:46 a.m. today the equinox arrived, which is to say we officially crossed into spring.
Scientifically speaking, this is the point at which the sun is directly above the equator and day and night are the same duration.
Practically speaking, it’s the day you start rummaging through the medicine cabinet to see if there is any Claritin leftover from last year.
On to the news:
PeaceHealth and ApolloMD, the Georgia-based contractor it’s chosen to run its Lane County emergency departments, are being sued. The current provider Eugene Emergency Physicians and other plaintiffs filed a lawsuit today alleging the new arrangement violates an Oregon law that regulates the corporate practice of medicine. Ashli Blow continues her coverage of the issue.
More on the same story: PeaceHealth executive Dr. Jim McGovern rejected Gov. Tina Kotek’s request earlier this week that PeaceHealth delay the ER switchover for six months. Ben Botkin has the story.
In a gritty performance, the Ducks women’s basketball team knocked off Virginia Tech, 70-60, in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. A tough opponent awaits on Sunday: the Texas Longhorns, a team with eight players 6-foot-1 or taller. Tyson Alger is in Austin, Texas, covering the tourney. Watch for more of his coverage this weekend.
Christopher Allan Turner, 60, pleaded guilty today to shooting and killing his parents in February 2025 at the home he shared with them in the Mohawk area. He was sentenced to life in prison. Jaime Adame has the story.
After working this winter to cut $30 million from its 2026-27 budget, Eugene School District 4J announced it may need to find $10 million to $20 million more in savings. The district says estimated costs for employee health insurance and pension contributions came in higher than expected.
Crews have begun tearing down the old PeaceHealth hospital at Hilyard Street and 13th Avenue, known as University District.
