Good evening,
No one complained yesterday that I was doing a poor imitation of Bob, so I’ll give today’s PM another go.
I love animals. My family has a dog and a cat, and they are awesome. I’m also the guy who always takes time to look at the sheep on the side of I-5 when I drive by, and I have photos on my phone of squirrels and nutria hanging out by the river. That’s one of the reasons why Ashli Blow’s story about coyotes on Mount Pisgah made me sad.
Ashli’s been working on this for a while, examining not just what happened with the creatures, which included one being euthanized, but also speaking with experts about the their behavior and how visitors might need to adjust their enjoyment of the area.
It just got easier to access the Alton Baker Dog Park — for now. Grace Chinowsky writes that the wooden footbridge spanning the canoe canal near Autzen Stadium will reopen next week for a couple of months before repairs are set to start anew.
Residents of the Dexter Rural Fire Protection District will be asked on the upcoming ballot to renew a five-year local tax that funds 24-7 staffing, daily operations, equipment, training and maintenance. Lucas Hellberg, our Dean Rea Intern, has the story.

In Mount Pisgah euthanasia effort, shot coyote vanished into thicket
By Ashli Blow
A wildlife contractor shot a habituated coyote at Mount Pisgah, tracking it into a blackberry thicket, suggesting the animal did not immediately die. Questions remain about humane euthanization and whether habitat pressures — including growing use of social trails in denning areas — contributed to the conflict.
