Winner: Prince Pückler’s Ice Cream

Eugene’s longtime ice cream staple, Prince Pückler’s is a picture perfect example of a first date spot.
You can pop in, pick a particular flavor, start talking, and have the natural timer of eating through a serving of ice cream before deciding if the match-up is worth a second scoop, or would be better off melting away.

Any seat at Osteria DOP is a good one, but sitting at the counter and asking questions about the meal as it’s being prepared in front of you is a special treat for a pair of foodies.
Lookout Staff Pick: Vero Espresso House
I have a personal bias here. Eleven years ago, I had a first date with my now-wife here. But it’s a great first date spot — I’m on team coffee for first dates as opposed to dinner, which just feels intense to me. A good mix of indoor and outdoor seating. Food options that scream “I’m just getting to know you”: breakfast sandwiches, brunch options, light bites. No one’s trying to get a stomach ache on a first date. Not too fancy, but neat and clean, with enough people around you to drown out the sound of awkward conversation gaps.

Best Coastal Gem Everyone Should Experience
Winner: Oregon Coast Aquarium

Otters and octopi and anemone — not to mention the sharks and other marine life visible in its immersive underwater tunnel system — oh my! This Oregon coast staple will get you up close to the sea life that makes our Pacific coast perch special.

A lot of hikes in Lane County feel like they’re ripped out of a magical forest, but the Hobbit Trail — leading to a secluded beach through moss and ferns — is particularly wondrous.
Best Willamette National Forest Escape
Winner: Salt Creek Falls
Southeast of Oakridge and west of Willamette Pass. Off of Highway 58, look for signs east of milepost 57, turn onto Forest Service Road 5893 and follow signs for Salt Creek Falls.
Salt Creek Falls is Oregon’s second highest single drop waterfall (Multnomah Falls takes the cake) and a must-see for waterfall fans. It’s a low-lift hike with a high-impact view.
Runner-up: McKenzie River Trail
The trail begins 1 mile (1.6 km) east of McKenzie Bridge, 97413.
Whether you’re looking to hike or mountain bike your way through, this 26.5-mile trail runs along the scenic McKenzie River, bringing you past old-growth forests, waterfalls, creeks, volcanic rock and more.

The summit of Eugene’s southern signature butte is a eagle’s-eye view of the city is a 2,058-foot landmark with panoramic views of the Willamette Valley, the Coast Range and (on a clear day) the Cascade Mountains.

More than offering top-flight (pardon the pun, we had to) wildlife experiences, the Cascades Raptor Center is nestled into a lovely treed stretch of land east of Spencer Butte.
Lookout Staff Pick: Morning Glory Café
What could possibly be more Eugene than a cartoon frog playing a banjo, and also the frog is a vegetarian? I don’t think there’s a better way to start the first day of a trip to Eugene than breakfast at Morning Glory Café. It’s a perfect crash course to our fair city’s vibe: the vegan and vegetarian menu (which is very, very good — I always get the Three Sisters), the local art for sale on the walls, the just-too-cute merchandise at the front counter (that’s where the banjo frog lives in sticker form) and the painterly interior peppered with morning glory flowers.

Winner: Floating the McKenzie River
Along Highway 126.
Bring a life jacket, water safety knowledge and willingness to have a good time when you float down the McKenzie (maybe on a rafting tour from the Helfrich family?) in a raft, taking in the cool, fresh water from up close. (Not that up close — please, please do not jump in.)

It’s a nature center so twice, an eaglet went there twice. The nature center offers flights shows so visitors can see owls, falcons and more in the feathery flesh, and learn about birds of prey from seeing them up-close, guided by an expert team of bird nerds.

One of two museums on University of Oregon campus, it features oodles of Oregon history, including what might be the world’s oldest shoes.
Best Place to Stock Up before Hitting the Road

A big-box store with a big-time fandom, Costco won our category for stocking up before a day trip out of Eugene. Apparently, our Lookout readers love buying in bulk before driving off… and if you can’t find it at Costco, it probably doesn’t exist.

Lookout Staff Pick: Main Street Market
Before I lived here full time, I lived in Seattle. I made frequent drives up and down Interstate 5 frequently to see my partner who lives in Springfield. When heading back north, I would stop by Main Street Market, because they had everything I could ask for: pre-made sandwiches for the road, snacks, bubbly water. They also have fresh produce, and I’d pick up some things to make when I got home. (And, I even got my coffee fix, because next door is Washburne Cafe.) Eventually I moved to Springfield myself. I still go to Main Street Market for my weekend adventures.

It’s so beautifully Eugene to have a spot with annual festivals in honor of wildflowers and mushrooms, but don’t forget to check out the work parties and nature-loving events year round.

This historic cemetery frequently hosts open houses and concerts in addition to being a beautiful, contemplative slice of Oregon history. Pay your respects to names like Eugene Skinner, John Whiteaker and other names that now pepper Eugene’s maps.
