The week's lineup includes a state Senate forum, a watch party for Thursday's gubernatorial debate and a session with Lane County's top election official.
The City Club of Eugene is focusing this week on the Nov. 3 elections, with three events on its schedule, including a Friday session with Lane County’s top election official.
All three events are open to the public and free to attend. Here’s the lineup:
Senate District 6 candidates
At noon Thursday, Oct. 1, the three candidates for state Senate District 6 will speak at a forum at Roaring Rapids Pizza Co., 4006 Franklin Blvd. in Glenwood. The event is co-sponsored by the Springfield City Club and the League of Women Voters of Lane County.
Candidates scheduled to appear are Republican Jack Tibbetts, Democrat Sierrah Williams and Libertarian Caleb Ticer. They are running to succeed Republican Cedric Hayden, who was barred from running for reelection.
Senate District 6 does not include the Springfield city limits, but abuts the city on its northern, eastern and southern borders. The district stretches into eastern Lane County and extends north into Linn and Marion counties.
Gubernatorial debate watch party
On Thursday evening, Oct. 1, the club is hosting a watch party for the gubernatorial debate between Gov. Tina Kotek and state Sen. Christine Drazan. The watch party will be held at the Ford Alumni Center, 1720 E. 13th Ave. on the University of Oregon campus. Doors opening at 5 p.m. The debate itself, while in Eugene, will be held in another location without an audience. It is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
It’s the first head-to-head meeting of the election season between Kotek, a Democrat, and Drazan, a Republican. Lookout Eugene-Springfield is co-sponsoring the debate alongside the Oregon Journalism Project, KVAL-TV, and the UO School of Journalism and Communication.
Registration for the watch party is suggested, but not required. The watch party is hosted by the School of Journalism and Communication, in partnership with the Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics, the City Club of Eugene, and the Springfield City Club.
County’s top election official
At noon Friday, Oct. 2, the City Club of Eugene meets at its usual time to hear Lane County Clerk Tommy Gong speak about election security. The meeting will be held at WOW Hall, 291 W. Eighth Ave.
Gong, the county’s top election official, will speak about what it takes to run an election these days and the safeguards and procedures that underpin the right to vote. Gong has nearly 25 years of experience in election administration and has previously served in Contra Costa, San Luis Obispo and Stanislaus counties in California.
The Friday meeting of the club will be livestreamed and available for viewing later on its YouTube channel. Club meetings are rebroadcast the following Monday on KLCC, 89.7 FM, and later, as a club podcast.
