The city reduced speed limits on two north Eugene streets last month and is planning reductions on three more in August.
In July, Eugene reduced the speed limit on Goodpasture Island Road to 30 mph east of Delta Highway and to 35 mph west of the highway. The speed limit on Green Acres Road also dropped from 35 to 25 mph between Delta Highway and Norkenzie Road.
This month, the city plans to reduce speed limits from 35 to 25 mph on River Loop 1 and 2 and on Wilkes Drive, three roads near Santa Clara, according to a city news release Tuesday, Aug. 4.
More than two-thirds of traffic deaths in Eugene last year occurred on streets with a speed limit of 35 mph and higher. The recent speed limit changes are part of an effort to reduce limits in areas “where data and daily experience show it can make a meaningful difference,” according to the news release.
Changing speed limits in Oregon requires cities to partner with the Oregon Department of Transportation for speed zone investigations. ODOT is reviewing additional locations for possible speed limit updates, like Highway 99 and Washington and Jefferson streets, according to the news release.
“For many years, Eugene didn’t have staff capacity to pursue speed limit changes,” the news release states. “With new staff on board, the city is now able to identify locations where lower speeds can support safer travel and work with ODOT to implement reduced speed zones.”
The city reduced the speed limit on north River Road from 40 to 35 mph in December 2025. In March, it reduced limits on Polk Street, Oak Patch Road, Elmira Road and Maple Street from 30 to 25 mph.
