The Lane County assessor’s race will not appear on the May 19 ballot and will instead be officially decided in the November general election, Lane County Clerk Tommy Gong said.

Gong said that’s because only one person, incumbent Mary Vuksich-Shafer, filed to run for assessor in May. The change, he said, is based on Oregon election law and the Lane County Home Rule Charter, which allow most races with only one candidate to skip the May primary election.

But that’s not the case with another unopposed race on the ballot.

The sheriff’s race, which has attracted just one candidate — incumbent Sheriff Carl E. Wilkerson III — will still be featured on the May ballot. Gong said the county charter requires that particular race to be included in the primary even if only one candidate has filed.

Wilkerson was appointed sheriff by the Lane County Board of Commissioners after former Sheriff Cliff Harrold resigned in May 2025.

Regardless of what happens in the May election, the county charter requires that Wilkerson’s name appear on the November ballot.
