Two Eugene police officers sustained injuries early Friday, Oct. 23, after attempting to pull a man armed with a knife out of a vehicle, police said.
Matthew Edward Wedekind, 33, is alleged to have slashed an officer multiple times on the wrist.
He was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault, assault on a public safety officer, first-degree criminal mischief, resisting arrest and unlawful use of a weapon.
Police responded at 4:07 a.m. to a report of a man in a vehicle ramming parked cars near 2500 Chula Vista Boulevard in the Fairmount neighborhood west of Hendricks Park.
Officers spoke with a resident of the neighborhood who described the man as an ex-boyfriend who had crashed into her vehicle, police said.
Inside a Toyota Camry with heavy front end damage, officers spotted a man laying in the driver’s seat with arms crossed and eyes closed, police said.
After the man refused to exit the vehicle and officers found the doors locked, an officer broke out a window. When an officer attempted to pull the man from the vehicle, he punched an officer in the face and pulled out a knife as officers attempted to gain physical control over him, police said.
In addition to an officer with cuts to the wrist, another officer had blood dripping from his face, police said. Officers shocked the man with a Taser and were able to handcuff him.
