A 21-year-old man told officers he thought he had pulled the trigger on an unloaded gun that instead fired a round early Saturday, Aug. 15, injuring a 17-year-old girl, Eugene police said.
Rafael Juventino Nunez was booked into Lane County Jail on suspicion of second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.
The girl sustained injuries to one of her arms and her chest, police said.
Officers responded at about 12:15 a.m. to an apartment on the 3600 block of West 13th Avenue, according to police and dispatch records.
Nunez told police he had friends over and was attempting to disassemble a gun, according to a news release. Police said he told officers he had been drinking and had used a dab pen to consume marijuana.
Nunez told officers he pulled the trigger without realizing a bullet remained in the gun’s chamber, with the shot then striking the girl, police said.
