Eugene police on Wednesday, Jan. 7, arrested a 36-year-old man suspected of striking a bicyclist with a vehicle and leaving the scene.
Kacy Daniel Foster was booked into Lane County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run with injury, according to online jail records.
The bicyclist, 63-year-old Merle Dean Sheffield, of Eugene, sustained serious injuries in the Jan. 3 collision, was taken to a hospital and later died, police said.
The collision took place at about 5:34 p.m. near Side Street, with police blocking southbound lanes of Highway 99 after finding Sheffield unconscious in the road. Police said the suspect vehicle fled south on Highway 99.
In a statement Wednesday, police thanked the public for its help. An image released by police Monday showed a car said to likely have damage to its windshield on the passenger side, with police asking the public for tips.
Highway 99, a four-lane thoroughfare, has been the site of at least five pedestrian fatalities in 2023 and 2024, the most recent years for which the city has released data on fatal collisions.
A crowdfunding site seeking donations for Sheffield’s cremation expenses has been established.
