QuickTake:

Kenneth John Alvord, previously arrested in the case on a weapons charge, is now facing second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter charges in the death of Justin Garrett Huser.

A man previously arrested in connection with a fatal shooting on West 18th Avenue in March has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of 35-year-old Justin Garrett Huser.

Kenneth John Alvord, 37, also faces a first-degree manslaughter charge as part of a secret indictment made public Wednesday, Oct. 8, in Lane County Circuit Court.

Jail records show Alvord was booked Wednesday into Lane County Jail. He previously had been free on a conditional release after being charged back in March with unlawfully using a weapon. Alvord had a court hearing scheduled for Wednesday in that case.

The indictment also includes the unlawful use of a weapon charge. Alvord on Wednesday pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Eugene police announced Alvord’s arrest after the shooting, which took place on March 8 at a home on the 3100 block of West 18th Avenue. Police said they responded to a report of shots fired, then found Huser deceased inside the home and detained “a person known to the deceased.”

Previously this year, there have been two other shooting deaths in Eugene investigated as homicides. The term refers to deaths caused by another, but does not necessarily mean the death resulted from criminal activity.

Bryan Jivon Fitzgerald, 24, was shot March 3 near East 23rd Avenue and Willamette Street. Police arrested Levi Rosenthal Eva, 18, who has been charged with second-degree murder.

Jaime Javier Lagarda-Govea, 21, was shot Sept. 5 in the parking lot of Walmart at 4550 W. 11th Ave. Eugene police said the shooter remained on the scene and they referred the case to the Lane County District Attorney Christopher Parosa for review. Parosa told Lookout Eugene-Springfield on Oct. 3 that he was still awaiting further reports from police.
