QuickTake:

The charges come about three weeks after the shooting, which prompted text alerts to neighbors. The 21-year-old suspect was arrested in the same general area on Monday, after briefly eluding police in the woods.

A 21-year-old man has been charged in connection with a shooting that shut down East 30th Avenue near Spring Boulevard the morning of Sept. 3, Eugene police said Tuesday, Sept. 23.

Zachery John Padgett faces charges of first-degree assault with a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to court documents.

The shooting took place shortly after 5 a.m. People in the area received text alerts from the city as police canvassed the area and shut down East 30th Avenue, a major thoroughfare.

The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said. In their statement about Padgett, police said he is suspected of robbing a 35-year-old man of his backpack in a wooded area. However, no robbery charge had been filed against Padgett in Lane County Circuit Court.

Police investigating the shooting on Sept. 18 searched for Padgett in the woods, eventually taking him into custody at East 27th Avenue and Central Boulevard after he initially eluded police.

At the time, police arrested him in connection with a 2024 case in which a stolen Toyota Prius struck a pedestrian as well as a separate case from this year involving alleged criminal mischief.

Prosecutors on Monday, Sept. 22, filed charges in connection with the shooting.
