A 33-year-old man died from injuries after being struck by at least one vehicle Friday, Sept. 12, Springfield police said.

The collision involving a bicyclist took place in the 4200 block of Jasper Road at about 9:20 p.m., according to a news release Thursday.

When police arrived, they found the man in the roadway, unable to respond to officers.

The man was taken by ambulance to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend, where he died.

Police on Friday identified him as Jordan Schwartz, of Springfield.

Aziz Ismail, manager for SnackTown Market, said the man’s father came into the store on Monday and told him about the death of someone he had come to know as a “good friend.”

“He was a gamer, always gaming. He wanted to travel,” Ismail said, recalling his frequent banter with the customer he knew as “Jordan” or “J.D.”

Ismail said he knew the man for more than a decade, and that he lived nearby. For most of that time, he mostly walked or took the bus to get around, Ismail said.

“He recently got an e-bike, so he was excited. He was always going everywhere on e-bike,” Ismail said, clarifying that the man lately had been riding “like a Razor or scooter, like you can stand on.”

Ismail said he didn’t know details about the collision, but noted that on Jasper Road “going this direction at night is always dark, so you can’t see a person.” He said he’d previously heard of pedestrians or cyclists getting forced off the roadway.

The man was “too young to be gone,” Ismail said.

The Springfield Major Accident Investigation Team continues to investigate.
