A 61-year-old Springfield man died Tuesday morning, July 29 in a multivehicle collision that closed Interstate 5 near Goshen for about three hours, Oregon State Police said.

Kenneth Nicholas Thomas died at the scene. He was riding in a Dodge Charger driven by Timothy Brian Smith, 59, also of Springfield. Smith sustained serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, police said.

The crash took place at about 8 a.m. A Dodge Caravan, driven by Kennith James Nelsen, 56, of Coos Bay, was traveling south on I-5. Nelsen tried to turn into an emergency vehicle turnaround from the slow lane.

The Caravan struck the side of the Charger, also traveling south, which had swerved toward the median in an attempt to avoid the crash, police said. The Charger veered into an opposing lane of traffic, where it went beneath a Kenworth dump truck towing a loaded trailer, state police said.

The collisions took place south of Eugene, about two miles south of the Highway 58 interchange.

Neither the driver of the Caravan nor the driver of the dump truck, 44-year-old Jaison William Karow of Coos Bay, sustained injuries.

After the three-car collision, a separate collision also involving three cars took place in the southbound lanes of I-5, with no injuries reported.
