A fire in an unoccupied basement apartment led to the evacuation of the Florence Apartments in downtown Eugene, but firefighters contained the fire to a single unit.

“They were able to force the door and get the fire put out very quickly,” said Markus Lay, a battalion chief with Eugene Springfield Fire. No injuries were reported, he said.

Firefighters arrived at the apartments on the 1200 block of Willamette Street shortly after 10:30 a.m., soon closing that block of Willamette to traffic.

“Because there was a smoke alarm system that alerted other residents, they were able to alert us and get us here early,” Lay said.

At the scene shortly after 11 a.m., Lay said he expected residents would soon be able to return to their homes. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Lay said.
