Two Springfield police officers sustained “significant” stabbing injuries from a suspect who was then shot and killed by a law-enforcement officer Wednesday, July 30, according to a news release from the Springfield Police Department.
Lt. George Crolly on Thursday morning clarified that it was a Springfield police officer who shot the stabbing suspect. No further details were being released as of Thursday morning, Crolly said.
The officers were transported to an area hospital. The suspect died on the scene, despite lifesaving efforts, the release said. The condition of the officers was not available Wednesday night. Neither the officers nor the suspect were immediately identified.
Springfield police responded to a call at 2:37 p.m. of a disorderly person in a business near Gateway Street and Beltline Road, a commercial area with several businesses located on both sides of Gateway.
When an officer contacted the person about a block away at Gateway Street and Kruse Way, the suspect brandished two knives and threatened to fight the officer, who called for cover, the news release said. The suspect stabbed two officers, Springfield police said.
Oregon State Police troopers responded to the scene to assist.
“The subsequent arrest of the suspect resulted in an officer involved shooting,” Springfield police said in the news release.
No other information was available as of Wednesday afternoon.
As of 6 p.m. Wednesday, Gateway Street remained closed from Gateway Loop north. The closures were expected to last at least another two hours.
