There are few things more enjoyable than sharing good news. That’s why today is a good day.
Annie Aguiar, our arts and culture correspondent, has been promoted to audience editor, working with both Lookout Eugene-Springfield and Lookout Santa Cruz, effective immediately.
If you follow us on Instagram, you might have noticed a change in what and how we post there. That’s Annie’s work. She is skilled at finding ways to get our stories to people in our community, and it has worked.
As we continue to grow Lookout Eugene-Springfield, getting our news to more people is vital. Annie is going to help us do just that — full-time. She has done an exceptional job as a correspondent, including a first place in the Best of the West journalism awards.
She set a strong foundation for our next arts and culture correspondent, and the search for that person has already started.
“I started in journalism because I loved designing newspapers. Anyone who has designed anything knows it’s a lot more than putting together photos and text. It’s thinking through how a story should best meet people as it lives in the world, and I have a lot of ideas on how to think that way across Lookout,” Annie said. “Though I feel some sadness in moving out of the arts beat, I’m excited for my work to touch every corner of the newsroom and beyond.”
During the summer months, our Instagram audience grew by nearly 50% and is now a great place to find and hear the news — and why it matters to you — directly from Lookout journalists. That was Annie’s doing.
“As Lookout Local’s audience editor, Annie will help make sure the great work our journalists do, in both Eugene and Santa Cruz, reaches people where they are, whether that’s on social media, in our app, online or in their inbox,” said Ashley Harmon, Lookout Local chief of staff. “It’s all about making sure our communities get the local news they need, and with Annie on the team we’ll do that even better.”
Annie has become a fixture in our community — including her stint as a judge for this year’s SLUG Queen competition. And that won’t change. You will see her with Lookout Eugene-Springfield at local events, including Saturday’s BRiGHT Parade and next month’s home show.
And if I know Annie, she will continue to write from time to time.
“You can’t stop me from filing copy,” she said.
This also means we get to bring a new journalist into Lookout’s Eugene newsroom. We are conducting a national search to find someone with the passion for arts and culture that Annie has.
