For the second time in less than two weeks, a University of Oregon wide receiver has been arrested.

Messiah Amare Hampton was booked Friday, Oct. 30, into Lane County Jail and released later in the day, online records show.

His arrest was previously reported by TV station KEZI and The Oregonian, both of which reported Springfield police arrested Hampton on two counts of attempting to elude police and a misdemeanor count of reckless driving.

An email sent to Springfield police Friday evening was not immediately returned.

On Oct. 18, Springfield police arrested wide receiver Evan Stewart on suspicion of DUII. Stewart’s case remains pending in Springfield Municipal Court, with no decision yet on a formal charge.

The Oregonian reported that Hampton’s arrest follows a Springfield police investigation into two vehicles that eluded police Oct. 18, the same date as Stewart’s arrest.

Stewart has been charged with driving with a suspended license, considered a traffic violation, after failing to appear in court for multiple traffic violations in Coburg and Eugene.

Hampton, a freshman from Rochester, New York, ranks fifth in receptions for UO so far this season and has caught two touchdowns. He did not travel with the team for the Oct. 24 game at Illinois for undisclosed reasons, and was listed as out on the most recent player availability report for UO’s next game Saturday against Northwestern.

Stewart is not listed on the weekly report, which typically means that he is available to play Saturday.
