QuickTake:
After three years of stability, Oregon football coach Dan Lanning faced vacancies in both of his top assistant jobs. The successors have been named: Drew Mehringer and Chris Hampton.
Following the departures of Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein to Kentucky and defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi to Cal, the Ducks officially promoted Drew Mehringer and Chris Hampton to the respective jobs on Thursday.
“Chris and Drew have been tremendous coaches and leaders since joining our program and are more than deserving of taking these next steps in their careers,” Oregon football coach Dan Lanning said in a press release. “They have each done an unbelievable job of helping our student-athletes excel both on and off the field. We are thrilled to be able to promote them to our coordinator roles and maintain the momentum we have created as a program and a coaching staff.”
It’s a pair of fascinating hires for Lanning, who hadn’t needed to fill a coordinator role since offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham left for the head coaching job at Arizona State following the 2022 season.
Lanning snagged Stein away from Texas-San Antonio to replace Dillingham. Lupoi was hired to Lanning’s initial staff in 2022. Together, the two gave Oregon a rare three-year stretch of continuity at its top assistant positions.
Both coaches spent the last month juggling preparations for Oregon’s playoff run while simultaneously establishing themselves at their new schools. And while Lanning has often gone out-of-house for his hires since taking over the program, the Ducks’ decision to promote from within brings the benefit of familiarity.
For a roster returning stars such as Dante Moore, Iapani Laloulu, A’Mauri Washington and Teitum Tuioti, there shouldn’t be much of a breaking-in period with their new leaders.

Mehringer, 38, has been with Lanning from the start in Eugene, serving as the team’s tight ends coach for the last four seasons. He came to Oregon from New Mexico, where he spent a season as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, and previously served as Rutgers’ offensive coordinator in 2016.
“He is an incredibly smart and innovative coach who will do a great job leading our offense and putting our student-athletes in position to succeed,” Lanning said. “Drew has earned this opportunity and I am looking forward to seeing him continue to grow as a coach and a leader.”
Hampton, 39, joined Oregon in 2023 after working two seasons as Tulane’s defensive coordinator. With the Green Wave, Hampton oversaw a defense that immediately jumped 82 spots nationally in scoring defense and 44 spots in total defense following his takeover.
At Oregon, Hampton served as the team’s defensive backs coach and co-defensive coordinator.
“Coach Hampton is one of the best defensive minds in the country and a terrific leader of men,” Lanning said. “He has really poured into our program over the last three years and has played a huge role in our improvement and success on the defensive side of the ball. Chris’ ability to build relationships with current and future student-athletes is special and we are excited to have him in this role moving forward.”
Both have big shoes to fill. Oregon finished with a top-10 scoring offense in two of Stein’s three seasons, while Lupoi has been a semifinalist for the Broyles Award — given to the nation’s top assistant coach — in each of the last two years.
