We are writing in support of Callee Ackland, Springfield City Council candidate. We are SEIU 503 union members who work at the Springfield Public Library and History Museum, but our opinions are our own. Our statewide union endorsed Ackland, and we have experienced her work ethic, integrity and competence as our co-worker.
We witnessed her leadership with Save Springfield Library last spring, which aimed to keep our public library open for all and sufficiently funded. In that role, she demonstrated her values, declaring, “The library ensures that everyone, no matter their income or background, has the tools they need to learn, connect and thrive.” We see this ourselves, five days a week. Ackland is deeply in touch with our community.
It is our privilege to work with the public and see firsthand many of our community’s strengths and needs. The library supports families of all ages, students, teachers, business owners, workers, community groups and retirees from across our community. We know that 45% of Springfield households are renters — higher than state and nationwide rates. Access to safe, affordable housing is essential for a thriving community.
Ackland is a renter herself. Her work as a tenant advocate for the Springfield Eugene Tenant Association and her experience serving on the Springfield Planning Commission and participating in the Lane County Community Health Improvement Coalition speak to her dedication to making Springfield a better place for everyone. Our community would benefit from having a councilor with Ackland’s perspective on these issues.
As SEIU members who care deeply about Springfield, we trust Ackland to listen to ordinary Springfielders. We trust her to work with other residents and city councilors to continue building a strong community. We trust Ackland’s leadership, vision and drive to work toward a brighter future for all of Springfield — and you can, too.
