I first knew Jasmine Hatmaker as a quiet, determined, hard-working student at Cal Young Middle School. Since then she has proven to take those same qualities into her adult life. She understands that the door to achievement is opportunity and is committed to creating opportunity to all citizens of Eugene.
Her position as a board member for SquareOne Villages and Lexy’s Playground as well as her volunteer work with Community Supported Shelters, Food for Lane County, NAACP and many others demonstrate this commitment to community. She also brings to the table a wide range of life experiences which would prepare her to respond to the needs of the people in Ward 5 and the rest of Eugene.
Her involvement in the mortgage and realty business has made her acutely aware of the difficulty in finding affordable housing in Eugene, an issue that is at the heart of her campaign. As a student of political science, she brings the understanding that research, listening and collaboration are the most likely roads to problem solving in a community as diverse as Eugene. As such, her response to issues that might come to City Council would be reasoned and caring rather than quick and easy.
As a serious student of the human condition, she recognizes that people want to live and work in communities with a vibrant environment of parks and libraries, a wide range of educational and recreational opportunities and a sense of neighborhood connection. As part of a small business, she also understands the need for well thought out economic development.
I agree with the many city councilors who have endorsed her that Jasmine Hatmaker’s voice on City Council would be wise to listen to if we want Eugene to thrive. She has my support.
