The planned July closure of the Augusta Sportswear garment plant in Coburg will affect about 83 workers, according to a state notice filed Wednesday, May 13, by North Carolina-based Momentec Brands.
Only “a limited number” of employees will be offered employment via transfer, the notice said, leaving the majority of a listed 28 embroidery operators, 14 trimming and inspection workers, nine patch application employees and many others without a job when the plant shuts down.
The notice listed an anticipated closing date of July 17. None of the workers are represented by a union, the notice said.
The plant, located in the large industrial park adjacent to Interstate 5, operated under the Augusta Sportswear brand beginning in 2019, according to past announcements. Augusta Sportswear then came under ownership of Platinum Equity in November 2023. The private equity firm owns about 60 companies, according to its website.
Platinum Equity merged Augusta with Founder Sport Group in January 2024, rebranding under the Momentec name, the firm stated on its website.
Last November, the city of Kannapolis, North Carolina, announced Momentec Brands was centralizing operations in a 756,000-square-foot customer service center expected to employ about 700 workers in the community, located near Charlotte.
The November news release called the plant “North America’s largest team-focused center dedicated to custom decorating, kitting, and comprehensive servicing of the needs for sports teams, events, and businesses,” and stated that Coburg operations would continue.
The churn in ownership for the Coburg facility began in 2019. The company was known for two decades as Pacific Headwear, according to an announcement at the time that Augusta Sportswear had acquired the privately held company.
