The Light the World Giving Machine has returned to Eugene’s Valley River Center, offering a hands-on way to donate to local nonprofits.

The Giving Machine, which operates like a vending machine, allows people to donate to local and global charities during the holiday season. People can purchase specific items and services, such as meals for the needy, oral hygiene kits, or utility assistance.

Area nonprofits featured in the Giving Machine include Catholic Community Services; Court Appointed Special Advocates, known as CASA; the United Community Action Network; the Community Sharing Program; and Linn Benton Food Share. All proceeds are given directly to participating nonprofits.

The machines accept debit and credit cards and mobile payments such as Apple Pay. Last year, the machine at the Valley River Center raised more than $60,000 in donations.

The Giving Machine is located near the mall’s Center Court and will be in place through Dec. 14.

The Giving Machine campaign, sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, launched in 2017. This holiday season, the machines will be in more than 130 cities in 21 countries, according to a news release.
