Happy late August, Lookout readers! There’s a bit of a chill in the air, I’m donning a sweater here and there, but I promise we still have some summer left. I have some ideas for what you could be doing with some of these lazy, last summer days this week. Let’s get into it:
Trombone Shorty, and St. Paul and the Broken Bones
I try to be financially responsible and not impulse-buy tickets to concerts if I can avoid it. But when I remembered this was the week that New Orleans jazz-funk musician Trombone Shorty and Alabama soul musician St. Paul and the Broken Bones were coming to the Cuthbert Amphitheater, I had to.
- When: 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20
- Where: Cuthbert Amphitheater, 601 Day Island Road, in Eugene’s Alton Baker Park
- How much: Lawn tickets are $62.50.
Tracy Bonham
Tracy Bonham’s “Mother Mother” came out 30 years ago, an angsty cry from a 1990s rock girl appalled by life in the real world — “I’m hungry / I’m dirty / I’m losin’ my mind / Everything’s fine!” — that propelled the Eugene-born musician into the world of ’90s alternative rock.
She’s playing twice in Eugene this week; I spoke with Bonham last August when she last had a show in Eugene, about her upbringing in the city, what it was like to see her song used in an attention-grabbing needle-drop for the buzzy horror series “Yellowjackets” and more.
- When: 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Aug. 21-22
- Where: Art House, 492 E. 13th Ave., Eugene
- How much: Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the show.

A BRiGHT Parade build workshop
Hey, do you have a street-ready light-up parade float? If not, you can pop into a workshop ahead of the BRiGHT Parade on Sept. 26 to learn about having a parade float ready to go. The BRiGHT Parade team will answer questions on what lighting to buy and how different float setups work — and will offer lights-out time, to see how a project actually looks in the dark.
- When: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22
- Where: WOW Hall, 291 W. Eighth Ave., Eugene
- How much: Free
Final weekend of ‘The Winter’s Tale’ in the park
BEAR! BEAR! STAY STILL AND — oh wait? That’s not a real bear? That’s just a guy in a costume for Free Shakespeare in the Park’s production of “The Winter’s Tale,” which ends its run this weekend in Amazon Park? And if you go you’ll have a lovely time sitting in a beautiful park, taking in the words of the Bard?
- When: 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 22-23
- Where: Amazon Park, 22 Amazon Parkway, Eugene
- How much: Free
Two artists at The Hybrid Gallery
Two different exhibits at The Hybrid Gallery — Santiago Uceda’s bold, graphic “The Shape of Belonging” and Calpico Strawberrie’s otherworldly photographs “Instance” — are on view through the end of the month. Sunday evening, you’ll have the opportunity to hear both artists talk about their work.
- When: 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 23
- Where: The Hybrid Gallery, 941 W. Third Ave., Eugene
- How much: Free

Warner Creek 30th anniversary celebration
“If the forest defenders were the face of the Warner Creek blockade, 30 years ago this month, then Peter Wilde’s music was its soundtrack,” writes Community Voices contributor Tom Derungs. On Monday, Wilde — who Derungs calls “the Woody Guthrie of Warner Creek” — and Casey Neill will be performing at WOW Hall for an anniversary concert celebrating the 1996 Warner Creek blockade.
- When: 6:30 to 10 p.m., Monday, Aug. 24
- Where: WOW Hall, 291 W. Eighth Ave., Eugene
- How much: Tickets are on a donation basis, with a suggested range from $5 to $50, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
What’s playing at the movies?
There are two heavyweight box office releases for you this week, including a new Pacific Northwest-set horror.
New at the box office
I have been excited for Jane Schoenbrun’s “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” since it was first announced. (Schoenbrun’s previous films, “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair” and “I Saw the TV Glow,” were both big hits in my book.) “Camp Miasma” stars Hannah Einbinder (“Hacks”) as a queer director tasked with a reboot of a transphobic horror movie she still has a nostalgic attachment to, and Gillian Anderson (“The X Files,” generally being Gillian Anderson) as the final girl from the original movie, now a kooky, beguiling presence still living on the campground where the movies were set. Like Schoenbrun’s other work, it promises to be a novel look at how people connect to media and their own interior lives, through these nostalgic touchstones, funny, stylish and affecting.
Playing at Metro Cinemas.
“Tony” sees Dominic Sessa (“The Holdovers”) play a young Anthony Bourdain working in his first kitchen during a 1970s Cape Cod summer after spinning out as an aspiring writer. The New York Times’ review called it a “rambunctious, utterly charming little movie,” and fans of Bourdain will be sure to walk away having a sweet look back at his early days. It’s directed by Matt Johnson, a Canadian comedian who had a fantastic directorial turn with “BlackBerry” in 2023, so I’m sure it’ll be a great time.
Playing at Metro Cinemas and Cinemark Eugene Springfield.
Special screenings
The KOCF-Art House screening series on music-related films continues with the Oscar-winning documentary “20 Feet From Stardom,” exploring the lives of backup singers, those in the behind-the-scenes, unglamorous singing jobs that have fleshed out music for decades. Playing from Friday to Tuesday, Aug. 21-25.
Also at the Art House this week, the John Woo series continues with “Broken Arrow,” a 1996 action movie about stolen nuclear warheads and a rogue stealth-fighter pilot who squares off with his co-pilot to get them back. Planes, explosions, desert, John Travolta, Christian Slater: What more could you want out of a silly plane action movie? Playing from Friday through Thursday, Aug. 21-27.
That’s what I have for you this week, Lookout readers! If my picks aren’t up to your liking, check out our events calendar for more things to do. As always, if there are any events I should include here, or any feedback for this weekly list, drop me a line at annie@lookoutlocal.com.
