Eugene will host the U.S. premiere of “THEM,” a play written by Palestinian/Australian playwright Samah Sabawi in response to rising anti-immigrant sentiment she observed in Finland and Australia.

Shows will be July 24, 25, 26 and 31, and Aug. 1 and 2 at Lane Community College’s Blue Door Theatre, 4000 E. 30th Ave. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. The July 31 show will be an American Sign Language-interpreted performance.

The play is directed by Malek Najjar, a University of Oregon Theatre Arts professor, who said he chose to direct “THEM” as a response to increasing anti-immigrant and anti-Middle Eastern sentiment in the United States. The play explores themes of war, hope and survival.

“‘THEM’ is an attempt to give value to the lives of those who are suffering in wars and conflicts that are funded and perpetuated by Western powers that have turned a blind eye to the plight of millions of innocent civilians who are dying every day,” Najjar said.

The production is presented by the UO, in collaboration with the Student Production Association of Lane Community College and LCC Theatre. The production is also supported by The Very Little Theatre.

The cast includes Portland-based actor Dré Slaman and Eugene-based actors Zayne Clayton, Akash Dhruva, Manny Rojas Meza and Trevor Tarantino. Live music will be provided by Acoustic Pilgrims.

Tickets are $30 for adults, $18 for seniors and $15 for students. Purchase online or at the door one hour before showtime. Additional shows are planned for Aug. 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23 at the Portland Center Stage Ellyn Bye Studio.
