For the second time in less than two weeks, a University of Oregon wide receiver has been arrested.
Messiah Amare Hampton was booked Friday, Oct. 30, into Lane County Jail and released later in the day, online records show.
His arrest was previously reported by TV station KEZI and The Oregonian.
Springfield police in a news release Saturday said Hampton is suspected of being part of a vehicle pursuit “involving speeding vehicles” that began at about 4 a.m. Oct. 18 in the area of West Centennial Boulevard. The section of roadway lies east of Interstate 5 and west of Pioneer Parkway.
Police opted to terminate the pursuit, the news release said, but continued to investigate, leading to Hampton’s arrest Friday afternoon on suspicion of felony eluding and misdemeanor reckless driving.
Police continue to investigate a second vehicle involved in the pursuit, police said in the release.
On Oct. 18, Springfield police arrested wide receiver Evan Stewart on suspicion of DUII. Stewart’s case remains pending in Springfield Municipal Court, with no decision yet on a formal charge.
Stewart’s arrest is unrelated to Oct. 18 pursuit, Springfield police said.
Stewart was charged with driving with a suspended license, considered a traffic violation, after failing to appear in court for multiple traffic violations in Coburg and Eugene.
Hampton, a freshman from Rochester, New York, ranks fifth in receptions for UO so far this season and has caught two touchdowns. He did not travel with the team for the Oct. 24 game at Illinois for undisclosed reasons, and was listed as out on the most recent player availability report for UO’s game Saturday, Oct. 31, against Northwestern.
Stewart is not listed on the weekly report, which typically means he is available to play.
