The Cottage Grove Sentinel, a 137-year-old weekly newspaper in southern Lane County, will cease publication after its Wednesday, Oct. 28, edition, the paper announced last week.
The Sentinel is the third Lane County newspaper to halt publication this year, after Springfield’s The Chronicle and the Highway 58 Herald shut down earlier this year.
The Sentinel was bought in 2023 by Salem-based Country Media Inc.
The paper’s closure is due to “sharply declining advertising revenue,” according to Country Media’s chief executive, Joe Warren, who was quoted in the Oct. 21 Sentinel edition that announced the closure.
Warren also was quoted saying Country Media “offered businesses and subscriber advertising specials, offered special niche sections and ran a couple of discounted subscription campaigns to drive more revenue toward the small weekly paper.”
Country Media owns six other weekly Oregon papers, all of which will continue to publish.
KEZI first reported the story on Oct. 22.
According to additional reporting by The Register-Guard, Cindy Weeldreyer, a Cottage Grove resident who joined the Sentinel as an Oregon State University intern in 1990 and has since written for the newspaper, hopes to keep it alive and is exploring a biweekly or monthly relaunch.
