We have all experienced the thought of wanting to change something about ourselves. We want to lose weight or get more physically fit or just feel better. So we think, “I will eat healthier or walk more frequently or find ways to reduce stress in my life.”

We then set about doing something different for a few days or a few weeks, and then we fall back into the same old habits. What is missing in our previously failed attempts at change?

Those who have been successful at behavior change have found support for their efforts. Support can come in many forms. Sometimes an inspiring book, a lecture, a movie, a group or something else.

In my 50 years of experience as a physician, I have seen group support provide the most significant factor in initiating and maintaining behavior change. I have witnessed an epidemic of chronic disease with the root causes of poor diet, lack of exercise and overwhelming stress. I have witnessed disease reversal (getting off medication, lowering blood pressure, decreasing pain, improving mood, weight loss, etc.) in those who have attended educational classes that also provide ongoing, continuing support for healthier lifestyle choices. The “tribe of support” has been the key to success.

Many of you might not be aware that there is a local nonprofit, Eugene Plant Based Providers/Live Lifestyle Medicine, which provides this “tribe” to help with healthier lifestyle choices and support behavioral change. Anyone interested can access all of their free activities (in-person and online classes, movies, shopping tours, walks, and potlucks).

This nonprofit focuses attention on the latest medical specialty — lifestyle medicine. Lifestyle medicine is more than a “pill for every ill,” but addresses the root causes of many of our chronic diseases. There is no homework required, the classes are free and the success stories are very inspiring!

You might consider enlisting this support with your next resolution to change. Best of health to you.
