A 24-year-old Eugene man was sentenced Friday, May 29, to 17 years and one month in prison after sexually assaulting a child.

Reid Michael Squires pleaded guilty in Lane County Circuit Court to: first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, two counts of first-degree attempted sexual abuse, and two counts of attempted use of a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct.

As part of plea negotiations with prosecutors, dismissed were: two counts of first-degree sodomy, a count of first-degree sexual abuse, and a charge of using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct.

Eugene police on July 18, 2025, took a report of alleged sex crimes against a child. The family of an early elementary-school aged child reportedly confronted Squires about the alleged abuse, according to a statement from Eugene police, resulting in Squires leaving his residence in Eugene.

Eugene officers and Lane County sheriff’s deputies searched Veneta, about 15 miles west of Eugene, after a Lane County Sheriff’s Office deputy recalled a man matching Squires’ description living in a homeless encampment. Squires was arrested July 22, 2025.

Separately, Squires pleaded guilty to an April 30 assault in which he punched a jail deputy in the face. Squires pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and assault of a public safety officer, and he was sentenced to 70 months in prison, according to a news release from Eugene police.

The sentences are to run consecutively, police said.
