U.S. Rep. Val Hoyle appears to have a challenger in the Democratic primary next year, Ben Botkin reports. Boris Wiedenfeld-Needham, a Eugene businessman who has been active in local Trump protests, was spurred to run by Hoyle’s vote against a Trump impeachment effort. “I just can’t sit by,” he said.

We told you last week how Art House cinema in Eugene had started using Kickstarter campaigns to gauge support for film festival concepts. The latest idea floated? The films of director Michael Mann. It turns out, yes, Eugene has Michael Mann fans. The Kickstarter went over the top shortly before its deadline Sunday, and the Art House will be screening the director’s films over the next three months — starting with 1981’s “Thief” and wrapping with “Ferrari” from 2023.
You know those people on the sidewalk with clipboards? In coming months you may encounter some who ask if you want to sign to put an initiative on the ballot that would amend Oregon’s Constitution to guarantee citizens a safe and healthy climate. Environmental advocates are taking the idea directly to the people, after the Oregon Legislature this spring dropped a bill to put the amendment on the ballot.
