For decades, I served our community as a firefighter and ultimately as fire chief for Eugene Springfield Fire. Few areas left as lasting an impression on me as Bethel and west Eugene. Today, as a Eugene city councilor, I remain deeply committed to its future. That’s why I support Greg Evans for reelection in Ward 6.
Evans and I share more than a boundary — we share a responsibility to advocate for a part of Eugene that is both vital and often overlooked. Bethel is the backbone of our manufacturing economy and a community on the cusp of transformation, with new housing, job opportunities and investments like the Golden Gardens natural park and sports complex. These opportunities also bring challenges that require a steady hand and experienced leadership.
Public safety is at the top of that list. Anyone who travels on West 11th Avenue or Highway 99 understands the reality. These corridors are critical to our economy, but they also face persistent crime and emergency response challenges. I’ve seen it firsthand — and Evans has consistently advocated for practical, results-driven solutions. We must ensure employers can thrive while supporting safe and livable neighborhoods. Evans understands that balance. He knows economic development and livability go hand in hand.
The Golden Gardens sports complex reflects that approach. Evans has listened to community concerns, including environmental impacts, and incorporated those perspectives. At the same time, he recognizes the project’s potential to bring amenities, youth opportunities and new economic activity to Bethel.
I also want to speak candidly about something that doesn’t always get said out loud. Eugene’s City Council is often shaped by perspectives from other parts of the city, particularly south Eugene. While every voice is important, it makes it even more critical that Bethel has a strong, clear advocate at the table — someone who will speak up, push back when necessary and ensure that this community is not left behind.
Evans is a respected voice who pursues practical solutions. He chases results, not headlines, and has proven knowledge, skills and experience to do the work. For Bethel’s future, I urge Ward 6 voters to reelect Greg Evans. Bethel deserves nothing less.
