Hello Lane County Educators,
Lookout’s Arts & Culture reporter Annie Aguiar and I had the pleasure of visiting a class of seniors at Elmira High School last week, to share about Lookout’s community-based reporting, the many paths a journalism career can take, and to encourage them to apply for Lookout’s 2026 Journalism Scholarship Challenge (deadline extended through May 15!).
Students were asked to prepare questions in advance, and we were struck by how thoughtful and engaged they were; Annie and I left feeling very inspired.
Their teacher, Michelle Nelson, sent a note afterwards: “Thank you both so much for visiting the class today! It was wonderful having your insights on the industry and on writing, and I talked with a couple of students later in the day who said they really enjoyed it, too. Yay! I hope we can all stay in touch for possible future visits.“
Lookout is passionate about connecting with youth across Lane County, empowering them to develop their voices and hone their skills. We believe that early engagement with local news strengthens students’ connection to their community, building confidence in their ability to make informed decisions.
