Education and Children’s
Issues Correspondent
Lilly is a journalist with an eye for injustice and a passion for storytelling. With a background in government accountability reporting and English as a foreign language teaching, Lilly is combining her interests in journalism and schools as the education reporter at Lookout Eugene-Springfield.
She reports on the issues that affect families, educators and students in the Eugene area.
Lilly is from Indianapolis and studied journalism at Indiana University. There, she was a reporter and editor at IU’s student publication and took courses that brought her to Okinawa, Japan, and Kampala, Uganda, for reporting projects that were formative to her reporting philosophy.
She believes good journalism should build empathy and understanding, hold the powerful to account, highlight injustice and embrace complexity.
After completing a Pulliam Fellowship at the Indianapolis Star, Lilly moved east to Burlington, Vermont. There, she was the city government reporter for two years at the Burlington Free Press. She reported heavily on homelessness and housing issues, youth gun violence, development, and immigrant communities.
Lilly most recently lived in Toulouse, France, where she taught English in elementary schools for a year. Living abroad and working in schools gave her a new perspective on being an educator and adapting to a different culture and language. It also showed her the magic of cross-cultural connection and friendship.
As a new Eugene resident, Lilly is excited to get to know her community. She loves spending time outdoors, reading and finding new coffee shops and bakeries in her free time.
