The U.S.A. Track & Field Outdoor National Championships will not be in Eugene this summer, the first time in five years that the multiday event has been held at a location other than Hayward Field.

The 2026 event, to be held July 23-26, goes instead to Icahn Stadium at Randall’s Island Park in New York City. The stadium seats 5,000 people and can expand to accommodate additional fans. It is the first time the meet will be held in New York.

But Hayward Field will not be quiet this summer.

TrackTown USA lists 10 events on its 2026 calendar, starting with the Oregon Relays April 3-4 and finishing with the World Athletics U20 championships, featuring the world’s best 16- to 19-year-olds, Aug. 5-9.

In 2027, the U.S. championships — which includes the Para National Championships, featuring athletes with impairments — returns to Hayward Field.

“TrackTown USA indicated our preference to host the 2027 USATF Outdoor Championships & Para National Championships because we will be hosting the World Athletics U20 Championships Oregon 26 this summer,” a spokesperson for TrackTown told Lookout Eugene-Springfield.

Track fans believe the 2027 U.S. championships are also a more compelling meet, because the stakes are higher. That meet will serve as the qualifying event for the World Championships in Beijing in 2027. Athletes who finish in the top three qualify for worlds (as long as their world rankings are high enough).

There are no World Championships in track in 2026 — only the World Athletics Ultimate Championships, a new event. Athletes qualify for that by virtue of their placings in previous events, like the Olympics, or by world ranking.
