For nearly 100 years, the Very Little Theatre (VLT) has been a cornerstone of Eugene’s creative life; a place where stories are shared, talent is nurtured, and community is built.
Founded in March 1929 by eight theatre-lovers who joked that theirs would be “a very little one,” the theatre has grown into one of the oldest continuously operating community theatres in the United States. What makes VLT extraordinary is not just its longevity, but its unwavering commitment to being a volunteer-powered, community-centered home for the arts.
From the beginning, VLT has been guided by the passion and dedication of its volunteers. As the theatre proudly states, “Members are the backbone of the organization … from choosing the plays we present to building sets and costumes to greeting our audiences.” This spirit of shared ownership has shaped thousands of productions, welcomed generations of actors and creatives, and created a space where local talent can thrive without barriers.
Each season, VLT entertains, educates, and inspires residents from across Lane County. Families return year after year; young artists find their voice on its stages; longtime theatre-goers credit VLT with igniting their love of the performing arts. And throughout its 96 seasons, one thing has remained constant: VLT’s belief that theatre is most powerful when it is for everyone. As their WISE statement affirms, “Together, we strive to make VLT a place where creativity thrives—and EVERYONE Belongs.”

This treasured institution now stands at a crucial point in its story. The building that has housed decades of creativity also carries decades of wear. Modern audiences and performers need spaces that are accessible, comfortable, and equipped for contemporary storytelling. “Age can be a powerful indicator of maturity, skill, and dedication,” a longtime supporter noted, “but aging facilities and limited production spaces can hold back what the theatre is capable of becoming.”
VLT’s current expansion and improvement efforts are designed to meet that moment. Plans include upgrading rehearsal areas, improving accessibility throughout the building, modernizing seating and lighting, expanding workshop space, and ensuring that the theatre can continue offering safe, high-quality productions for decades to come. These improvements are essential investments in the theatre’s longevity and in its ability to serve the community it loves.

Unlike larger institutions with deep endowments, VLT remains proudly volunteer-run. Its strength is its community, and its future depends on the generosity of those who believe in the power of the arts to shape a thriving city. A gift to VLT is more than a charitable contribution—it is a legacy. It tells every young performer that their voice belongs. It tells every audience member that shared joy and shared storytelling still matter. It ensures that a nearly 100-year-old Eugene treasure remains strong, accessible, and boldly creative.
