The Springfield Block Party this Friday, Sept. 5, is expected to draw about 10,000 people to the city’s downtown. So if you’re going to attend, plan ahead how you’ll get there.

The sixth annual family-friendly gathering on Main Street spans several city blocks, from Pioneer Parkway East to Seventh Street. It will run from 4-10 p.m. Main Street will be closed, however, from noon on Friday to midnight, according to the city. During the closure, westbound drivers are encouraged to take Seventh Street to E Street, the city said.

Organizers recommend that visitors who plan to attend the Block Party walk, bike or ride the bus to the event.

The block party will have free city-sponsored bike valet parking at Fourth and A streets, across from PublicHouse. Anyone without their own bike can use the PeaceHealth Rides bike share program and park the bike at any hub near the Block Party.

Block Party-goers can also use a special code for a free Lane Transit District bus ride to the Downtown Springfield Station. The code is: LTD-SUW2-KONC.

For those who want to drive to outer areas of Springfield and ride the bus downtown, there are multiple LTD Park & Ride lots in Springfield with free parking. A limited amount of free parking for Block Party-goers will also be available at Booth-Kelly Center, at South Fifth and South B streets, a short walk from the event.

Attendees can plan ahead of time what they’re going to see and do on Friday with the help of the Block Party’s event map.

People can also visit the plaza outside Springfield City Hall on Friday evening for Herencia Hispana, a Hispanic heritage celebration that will include music, dancing and a Mexican independence ceremony.
