Girls basketball lineup offers challenges for conference contenders 

Lane County girls basketball teams jostle for league position in this week’s key games. Here’s a roundup:

• Mohawk at Alsea, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10: Mohawk (5-1 league, 18-3 overall) sits in second in the 1A-3 Mountain West League, but Alsea (4-1, 16-6) is a half-game behind. The winner of this one is in better shape to take aim at first-place Mapleton (7-0, 15-5).
• Grants Pass at Sheldon, 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13: The Irish (5-3 league, 16-4 overall) are third in the 6A-7 Southwest Conference and are ranked No. 12 among 6A teams by the Oregon School Activities Association. But the team can pick up a big league win Friday against second-place Grants Pass (7-1, 12-8).
• Pleasant Hill at Creswell, 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13: It’s a big week for the No. 6 Billies (6-2 league, 16-6 overall), with two games against the two teams that sit above them in the 3A-4 Mountain Valley Conference. Thursday’s game against conference leader No. 4 Creswell (7-1, 16-6) could shake up the standings.  
• Springfield at Eagle Point, 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13: The No. 2 Millers (7-0 league, 18-2 overall) hope to rebound from a disappointing loss last week at 6A West Linn with this road trip to Eagle Point (5-2, 11-8). A win would strengthen Springfield’s position on top of the 5A Midwestern League.
