A Union Pacific train entering the company’s Eugene Yard derailed at 11:43 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 8, but officials said no injuries were reported and the incident involved only empty railcars.
Six railcars derailed, and another two were damaged. The incident resulted from a human-caused train-handling error, according to Oregon Department of Transportation spokesperson Chris Crabb.
The derailment did not involve any spill of hazardous material. The site was cleared and returned to service within about 12 hours.
This incident marks the third train derailment in Oregon over the last 18 days, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported. Two other derailments have been reported near Toledo, inland from Newport, in recent weeks, the news outlet reported.
A similar derailment occurred in Union Pacific’s Eugene Yard in September 2016, when 13 rail cars went off the tracks.
