A low-head dam in the Willamette River between Eugene and Springfield continues to trap people in its powerful currents — and local governments in a loop of inaction. Ashli Blow reports on the underwater barrier that creates danger for people who go out on the river on hot days.

Christopher Smith, the pro at the Eugene Country Club and world-record holder in the novelty sport of speed golf, will take his shot at qualifying for the Senior Open, formerly the Senior British Open, on July 21. This one is fascinating — in setting his speed golf record 20 years ago, Smith played 18 holes of golf in 44 minutes and shot a 65.
