When you walk into Tavern on Main, it feels like a joint where Frank Sinatra might commandeer a booth and hold court. Classy, in a 1950s way. And yet. This is still down-to-earth Springfield. Can you bring kids? Sure. Wear a ball cap at the table? Definitely. Vanessa Salvia introduces us to one of the owners, a former pro skateboarder who one day stumbled into kitchen work. Check out her story of how this sort-of-fancy, sort-of-not restaurant came to be.

As federal money for food stamps is drying up amid the government shutdown, around 750,000 Oregonians could lose SNAP benefits starting Nov. 1. In response, Gov. Tina Kotek is releasing $5 million in emergency funds to help — though it only amounts to one day of SNAP payments that are normally disbursed in Oregon.

A federal judge in Eugene has turned down immigrant advocates, at least for now. They had asked the court for a temporary restraining order, requiring the Department of Homeland Security to allow attorneys access to people detained by ICE. But U.S. District Judge Ann Aiken asked for more information from both plaintiffs and defendants before another hearing on the issue in December.
