Good evening,

Springfield Public Schools has named three finalists in its search for an interim superintendent — to serve for the next school year while the board works to hire a permanent successor to Todd Hamilton, who resigned in February amid a turbulent few months for the district. The finalists include one internal candidate, Thurston High School principal Kimberlee Pelster, along with Lake County School District superintendent Michael Carter, and John Stover, superintendent of Rockingham County Schools in North Carolina.

Less than 86% of Oregon kindergartners who enrolled last fall were up to date on required vaccines, the Oregon Capital Chronicle reports, citing data from the state Health Authority. That includes both medical and nonmedical exemptions, and it continues a decade-long downward trend.

Reid Michael Squires, 24, of Eugene was sentenced Friday to 17 years in prison for sexually assaulting a child. Jaime Adame has the story.

Three Lane County high school baseball teams remain in the hunt for a state championship. Thurston, Marist and Creswell all play semifinal games tomorrow.

Who’s in our Community Voices section today?

Vivienne did ask me if letter-to-the-editor writers get paid. A good question, I think, that I’m not sure I’ve ever been asked. The answer, though, I had to tell her is: No, definitely not.

Your compensation, dear child, comes in the form of a warm, fuzzy feeling, in knowing you are part of an ongoing public conversation that — taken all together — helps makes your community a better place.
