Good evening,

Enjoy your Friday night, but remember that you will lose a precious hour of your weekend as we all “spring” forward from 2 a.m. Sunday to 3 a.m. in the blink of an eye. Yes, it’s that weekend. If you are a glass half-full sort of person: yay, more light in the evening! If you are a glass half-empty type, morning darkness will seem to linger interminably.

In other news, with the deadline fast approaching for candidates to file for local elected office, it had been looking like Lane County Commissioner Ryan Ceniga might be heading into a reelection campaign with no opponent. But Thomas Hiura, a multimedia engineer and small business owner who lives in the Santa Clara area, has filed to challenge Ceniga for the District 1 seat, which covers western Lane County — including Florence, Veneta and Junction City. Politics writer Ben Botkin spoke with him today about why he’s running.

The state Legislature wrapped up its short this afternoon, shortly after 4 p.m. Over the next couple of days we’ll take a look at what was accomplished and what wasn’t.

Lawmakers pass bills to push back against federal immigration efforts
