Good evening,
Enjoy your Friday night, but remember that you will lose a precious hour of your weekend as we all “spring” forward from 2 a.m. Sunday to 3 a.m. in the blink of an eye. Yes, it’s that weekend. If you are a glass half-full sort of person: yay, more light in the evening! If you are a glass half-empty type, morning darkness will seem to linger interminably.
In other news, with the deadline fast approaching for candidates to file for local elected office, it had been looking like Lane County Commissioner Ryan Ceniga might be heading into a reelection campaign with no opponent. But Thomas Hiura, a multimedia engineer and small business owner who lives in the Santa Clara area, has filed to challenge Ceniga for the District 1 seat, which covers western Lane County — including Florence, Veneta and Junction City. Politics writer Ben Botkin spoke with him today about why he’s running.
The state Legislature wrapped up its short this afternoon, shortly after 4 p.m. Over the next couple of days we’ll take a look at what was accomplished and what wasn’t.
But we have two stories out of Salem today from the Oregon Capital Chronicle:
- Lawmakers passed a few bills pushing back against federal immigration efforts, including a bill that would restrict law enforcement officers from wearing masks.
- They also voted to allow local communities more discretion over a larger portion of the money collected from the hotel-motel tax.
In sports:
The Creswell High School girls basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the state 3A tournament, and are facing the state’s No. 1 team, Vale, at, well, just about now: 6:30 tonight. Mike McInally rounds up all of the Lane County action in the prep basketball postseason.
A couple things from justice reporter Jaime Adame:
- Police arrested a 60-year-old man after a short chase on Gateway Street in Springfield — thanks in part to a police dog named Poker, according to Springfield police.
- An inmate at the Lane County Jail is facing new charges after he hit a deputy with a mop handle, the sheriff’s office said.
In our opinion section:
- A letter-writer says given how many religions there are in the world, it just makes more sense to leave prayer out of public government meetings altogether.
