Lookout PM: Person in ‘federal agent’ vest detains man at jail

A person wearing a “POLICE Federal Agent” vest walked into the Lane County Jail lobby on Oct. 15 and handcuffed a man who had just been released, escorting him away. The incident was described in a sheriff’s office report. Jaime Adame has the story.

Wildfire season officially ended last week. About 350,000 acres of forest and rangeland burned this year in Oregon — compared to 1.9 million acres in 2024.

The Springfield City Council appointed Andrew Buck to serve out the unfinished council term of Victoria Doyle, who resigned earlier this year. Buck works at Oregon Insurance Company and also serves on the Springfield Planning Commission. Lillian Schrock-Clevenger reports.

A vehicle crash damaged power poles in Springfield, knocking out power to more than 200 homes, some of which may be without power until tomorrow. The crash also caused a temporary closure of 35th Street. Lillian and Jaime have the story.

Another burglary was reported yesterday that matches a pattern of break-ins targeting Asian American households. Asian American Council of Oregon again called on law enforcement to prioritize work on the crimes. The same group is planning a forum tomorrow evening to discuss the situation with police.

A letter to the editor today calls for the community to stand together against the burglaries.

U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley took the Senate floor just before 6:30 p.m. yesterday and spoke for 22 hours and 37 minutes, decrying what he called President Donald Trump’s authoritarian actions.

Andrew Buck is the current chair of the Springfield Planning Commission. He will serve out the remainder of Victoria Doyle’s term, which expires at the end of 2026. Buck said he plans to run for the seat in next May’s primary election, to continue serving after Doyle’s term expires.

Asian American group again pushes on police after new burglary report

Eugene police on Oct. 10 announced the arrest of seven men in connection with the burglary of an Asian American-owned home. But the latest burglary report Tuesday, Oct. 21, fits a pattern of burglaries of Asian American households that stretches back to late 2023, Eugene police said.
