Good evening,

We are keeping an eye on things over at the Eugene Federal Building, where a mostly small, peaceful demonstration has been ongoing today — though the crowd was growing in size this evening.

The Oregon Legislature gaveled into order today for its semi-annual “short session.” While there looks to be a lot of ground to cover, Republicans and Democrats showed very different priorities on Day 1.

For you fans of Sam Bond’s Garage, the bar and music venue of 30 years that shut down in December, some good news: It has a new owner, who has announced — on the side of the building — that the watering hole will reopen this summer. Annie Aguiar has the story.

Two people were injured in a house fire early this morning west of Eugene. Jaime Adame reports.

In our opinion section:

Our editorial board weighs in on the Legislature, saying state lawmakers need to protect Oregonians from federal overreach, and it goes beyond immigration and ICE.

A guest column from Eugene resident Dylan Plummer says the EWEB-UO pilot project to run a fossil fuel-powered turbine to generate electricity is misguided and contrary to their own climate goals.

Trillium executive Sarah Brewer writes a guest column saying her health care organization, which is absorbing 90,000 Medicaid recipients who previously had care coordinated by PacificSource, is “dedicated to earning your trust and connecting you to the care you need.”

We also have a letter to the editor saying anti-ICE protesters who use violence “are wrong” and their actions are counterproductive.

Another letter-writer urges city leaders to stand up more strongly to the federal government’s use of chemical agents.
