Good evening,
About 180 people turned out in downtown Eugene today to protest ICE, following a federal immigration agent’s fatal shooting of a woman in Minnesota: “Enough people, I hope, will see that and realize that enough is enough,” said one protester. Photographer Payton Bruni and reporter Jaime Adame were there to cover the demonstration.
After much debate over the past few weeks, the LCC board agreed to move ahead with a goal to cut $8 million from the school’s budget over the next three years. No specifics are public yet about what areas will be cut. That will be work for the spring. Mike McInally reports.
The city of Eugene is considering the addition of bike lanes to Polk Street, which is likely to mean the subtraction of at least some on-street parking. The city is beginning to gather public input on the idea. There is an online survey and a meeting coming up. Check out Michael Zhang’s story for the details.
A quick announcement from inside Lookout:
We will be hosting two “Lookout Listens” sessions later this month. That’s when you can come visit our office on Willamette Street and yell at us — oops, I meant to say: tell us what you think about the work we are doing and what you’d like to see more or less of. Space is limited, so click the links below to register if you are interested.
- The first is at 12:30 p.m., Jan. 15.
- The second is at 11:30 a.m., Jan. 28 and is especially for people who are fans of the arts and culture scene.
Both sessions will last about an hour.
In our opinion section today:
The Lookout editorial board suggests that the constituents of Springfield Public Schools deserve better from the district’s administration, which has been too defensive and punitive.
A letter-to-the-editor writer wonders why traffic dangers associated with the proposed Amazon distribution center are not being looked at more carefully.
And finally, a guest column from Chris Wig urges his fellow citizens to get involved in any of the various volunteer boards and commissions.
