Advocates reported a surge in ICE detentions today in Lane County. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents swept up at least seven people in Cottage Grove, an advocate there said. According to an immigration attorney, at least two people were detained in Eugene, and at least 11 total in Lane County. Jaime Adame has been on the story all day.
Miranda Wilcox, a former payroll worker at Homes for Good, Lane County’s public housing agency, was sentenced today to about 4-1/2 years in prison for embezzling more than half a million dollars from the agency. At her sentencing hearing, she expressed “everlasting shame,” before she was taken away in handcuffs.
A former Marine and consultant, Jake Pelroy, who lives in Eugene’s Churchill neighborhood, is running for the Lane County Board of Commissioners seat currently held by Heather Buch. Pelroy has concerns about the county’s proposed $178 million CleanLane recycling project, calling it “wasteful.”
A storm blowing through the Willamette Valley today knocked out power briefly in Springfield, affecting about 50 customers.
High school football is entering its postseason tournaments, and a few Lane County teams are in the running. Mike McInally rounds up the games this Friday and Saturday.
On Saturday, the Bethel Education Foundation is holding a food donation drive. The foundation is partnering with the Bethel School District to support families who receive SNAP benefits while they are being cut or reduced. Drop off nonperishable food items from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Clear Lake Community Center.
