If you saw that haze in the sky today it was likely smoke from the 7,500-acre East Evans Creek Fire burning near Medford, our climate intern Leo Brown reports. The smoke was high enough that it wasn’t affecting air quality in Lane County, but it’s a reminder fire season is here.
In fact, Ashli Blow has a separate story today announcing that Lane County’s fire danger will ratchet up from moderate to high on Friday as vegetation has dried out rapidly over the past couple of weeks. The heightened danger level comes with some additional restrictions on campfires and uses of outdoor machinery. See her story for details.
Justice reporter Jaime Adame was in court today as a Lane County judge heard conflicting arguments on whether to allow the release on bond of Robert Wallace Lyons, who was convicted in the 1989 murder of 24-year-old Lori Stabenow at a Eugene motel. Lyons’ trial in 1991 included a now-discredited forensic science technique known as bite-mark analysis. The judge said he would decide on the release by tomorrow, Jaime reports.
Another setback for the stalled CleanLane recycling facility the county had planned to build in Goshen: The state Supreme Court refused to take up the county’s effort to get a permit for the project, after lower courts had denied it. Lillian Schrock-Clevenger has the story.
Lillian also covered the Lane County commissioners meeting today as they unanimously approved a construction contract with a Portland-based company to build the county’s planned stabilization center in Springfield. Some local contractors objected: “There’s a lot of general contractors in our area that are capable, qualified and hungry to do this job,” one of them told the commissioners.

The decision is the latest blow to the county’s efforts to site the CleanLane recycling project on land it has purchased in Goshen, south of Eugene. The county’s attorney told commissioners that staff continues to work toward an agreement to move the project to the Short Mountain Landfill.
Stabilization center contract goes to Portland company, despite local objections
