Happy Friday the 13th! Be safe out there.
We took some time before wading into the whodunnit over a window broken during the Jan. 30 protest at the Eugene Federal Building. Videos racing around social media appeared to show one large pane being broken not by protesters but by a federal officer inside, who threw a tear gas canister through the window out into the courtyard.
Today, the FBI released video, apparently from building surveillance cameras during the protest. It shows federal officers inside the building, protesters outside, and some breaking of glass. Jaime Adame explains what the various videos appear to show. He also interviews one protest eyewitness who took one of the videos showing the tear gas canister flying out through the window. Take a look, and see what you think happened.
A traffic safety forum last night drew about 100 people, including Eugene’s mayor, to Roosevelt Middle School — a 5-minute walk from where a UO doctoral student on a bike was hit by a car and killed. A UO professor showed a mockup of how Patterson Street, the site of the crash, could be reimagined.
Helmuth Rilling, the conductor who co-founded the Oregon Bach Festival in Eugene and served as artistic director for decades, died Wednesday at his home in Germany. He was 92. Lucas Hellberg has an obituary.

But an administrator says the district’s budget for next school year has a $10 million shortfall that will have to be solved as the budgeting process gets going this spring.
