Good evening,
- Dozens of University of Oregon faculty, students and alumni were in Portland for the second day of the UO Board of Trustees’ meeting today, and during a public-comment period, unleashed their displeasure over recent layoffs and budget cuts. Lookout correspondent Grace Chinowsky was there.
- Several Eugene-based environmental groups took media and congressional staff members on an aerial tour over the Willamette National Forest to make their case for the 2001 Roadless Rule. The Trump administration has proposed repealing it. Lookout correspondent Ashli Blow was aboard the Cessna Turbo 210, and brings you some video from the flight.
- For you “visual learners” out there, we’ve made some space for an ongoing series of standalone images. Lookout’s Isaac Wasserman brings you a photographic slice of life from somewhere in Lane County. Today’s image takes you to an evening rodeo practice in Cottage Grove. You can also see the archive of previous pictures on the same page.
- Over by Yachats, a person drowned yesterday after falling into the turbulent surf inside the strange basalt sinkhole known as Thor’s Well.
- Two men pleaded guilty to arson this month, in separate, unrelated brush fires this summer — one in Eugene and one in Cottage Grove.
- A new report estimates Oregon counties and school districts have lost $48.6 million because Congress refused to renew the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act, which expired in 2023. The law compensates counties that include large swaths of federal land and much of the money went to rural school districts.
