It’s a Eugene tradition for Mother’s Day weekend: Families celebrate their mothers with a stroll through Hendricks Park.

Last year, city officials say, over 7,500 people visited the park during the holiday weekend, and similar crowds are expected this year.

So the city is taking steps to manage the crowds — and is not-so-subtly suggesting that if people don’t want to deal with the crowds, they consider a visit to a different park this weekend, such as:

  • Owen Rose Garden, 300 N. Jefferson St.
  • Alton Baker Park, 200 Day Island Road
  • Downtown Riverfront Park, 701 E. Eighth Ave.
  • Santa Clara Park, 860 River Loop 2

If your weekend plans still include Hendricks Park, city staffers remind you to give yourself extra time, follow park staff directions, stick to the paths — and don’t pick the flowers.

And know that beginning at 7 a.m. Sunday, May 10, Fairmount Boulevard will become a one-way street, allowing westbound traffic only from Fairmount’s intersection with Floral Hill Drive to the 2800 block of Fairmount. The one-way traffic on Fairmount will be in effect through the morning of May 11.

City staff will be on-site to assist with traffic, parking and the increased number of visitors.

For those who can’t make it in person, the city has a 360-degree virtual tour of Hendricks Park online.
