A judge issued a warrant for Zachery Ty Bryan after the former “Home Improvement” actor missed a Lane County probation violation hearing while jailed in California.
Lane County Circuit Judge Bradley Cascagnette issued the warrant Monday, March 2, for Bryan, a child actor in the popular 1990s TV sitcom.
In California, Bryan, 44, was sentenced Monday, Feb. 23, to 16 months in jail after pleading guilty to driving under the influence two years ago in La Quinta, California, according to multiple published reports. La Quinta is about 130 miles east of Los Angeles.
“He got sentenced in California,” Bryan’s attorney, John Kolego, said during a scheduled hearing to consider whether Bryan should be jailed in Lane County for violating probation terms.
Lane County District Attorney Christopher Parosa said that, generally speaking, prosecutors have no way to compel a defendant in custody elsewhere to return to court in Lane County without such a warrant.
“Without a warrant, the case sits in limbo and we have no mechanism to command the individual back into court. Thus, a warrant is necessary under the circumstances,” Parosa said.
Bryan was arrested last November by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office following a report of reckless endangerment at a campground near Big Fall Creek Road involving Bryan and Johnnie Faye Cartwright. Cartwright has been described in previously published reports as Bryan’s fiancée and that the pair have multiple children together.
But a court order from a previous fourth-degree assault case prohibited Bryan from being in contact with Cartwright, according to the sheriff’s office, leading to his arrest. Cartwright was arrested at the same time and charged with three misdemeanors before pleading guilty in January to driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving.
